SUMMARY:The History of French in Louisiana
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nWednesday | March 27 |3- 4 pm PT | In English | Online \nFree for AFdeLA Members \nThe story of French-speaking Louisiana is often reduced to a single group – the Acadians/Cajuns. Yet even before the arrival of the Acadians\, French and Creole-speaking Louisiana was composed of a mosaic of populations including Native Americans\, Europeans\, and Africans. This presentation explores the evolution of language politics in Louisiana\, the deconstruction of French and Creole linguistic identities\, and recent efforts to revitalize these Louisiana heritage languages not only in classrooms\, but also through social\, professional and economic initiatives. \nJoseph Dunn has been working in the tourism and cultural sector in Louisiana for 25 years. His professional experiences as director of CODOFIL and with the French Consulate General in New Orleans\, among others\, have given him an in-depth understanding of the social\, political and economic issues involved in revitalizing Louisiana’s French and Creole heritage languages. Joseph is involved in a number of projects focusing on the development and enhancement of Louisiana’s French-Creole-speaking communities. He is a Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite (France)\, a member of the Ordre des Francophones d’Amérique (Québec) and was recently appointed Honorary Consul of Canada in New Orleans.

SUMMARY:Resistance at the Museum: Arts and Culture during the German Occupation
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nThursday | January 4 |1- 2 pm PST | In English | Online \nFree for AFdeLA Members \nDuring World War II\, German forces plundered hundreds of thousands of works of art – an estimated 20 percent of all artworks in Europe – from people opposed to Nazi ideology\, including Communists\, Freemasons and\, most prominently\, Jewish families. In Paris\, most of this artwork ended up in the Musée Jeu de Paume – a small museum located within the Jardin des Tuileries. During its four-year tenure as an unwilling repository for the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg (ERR)\, an estimated 22\,000 stolen works of art passed through the museum\, where they were either transferred into the Reich\, exchanged with other dealers or destroyed. \nIn this talk\, bestselling author Bryn Turnbull will introduce you to the Musée Jeu de Paume and the astounding impact of the war on France’s art collectors and connoisseurs\, as brought to life in her most recent novel\, The Paris Deception. \nBryn Turnbull is the internationally bestselling author of The Woman Before Wallis. Equipped with a master of letters in creative writing from the University of St. Andrews\, a master of professional communication from Toronto Metropolitan University and a bachelor’s degree in English literature from McGill University\, Bryn focuses on finding stories of women lost within the cracks of the historical record. She lives in Toronto. \nFollow Ms. Turnbull on: \n\nhttps://www.brynturnbull.com/\nTwitter: @BrynTurnbull\nFacebook: @BrynTurnbullWrites\nInstagram: @BrynTurnbullWrites\n\nTo purchase The Paris Deception\, visit Bookshops.org. \n
