SUMMARY:Adventures in the Louvre with Eliane Sciolino
DESCRIPTION:Elaine Sciolino\, the bestselling author of The Only Street in Paris\, shares an intimate journey of discovery and revelation into the world’s greatest museum.\n\nEvent begins at 1pm PT / 2pm MT / 3pm CT / 4pm ET \nThe Louvre is the most famous museum in the world\, attracting millions of visitors every year to masterpieces like the Mona Lisa\, the Venus de Milo\, and other magnificent works of human achievement.  But the museum — once a forbidding fortress built to house and protect French Kings — can seem more intimidating than inviting. \nJoin us as Elaine Sciolino\, author of Adventures in the Louvre\, guides us on a virtual visit to this magical space\, making it her mission to show us how anyone can forge an intimate connection with the museum. She demystifies the Louvre\, introducing us to her favorite artworks\, both legendary and overlooked\, and to the people who are the museum’s lifeblood: the curators selecting and arranging the works\, the artisans producing frames and engravings\, the builders overseeing restorations\, the firefighters protecting the aging structure. \nAn irrepressible and charming travel companion\, Sciolino takes us beyond the building’s imposing walls and behind the scenes to reveal a Louvre filled with unexpected mysteries\, untold stories\, and delights. \nAdvance Praise for Adventures in the Louvre \n“Nothing escapes Elaine Sciolino in the immensity of the largest museum in the world; she writes with the curiosity of a journalist\, the humanity of a storyteller\, and the joyful disrespect of an American… With her book\, we will find our way in a grand museum whose meanderings reflect the strange and glorious history of France.” — Gérard Araud\, former French ambassador to the United States and president of the Société des Amis du Louvre \n“This is essential reading for anyone visiting the Louvre — for those who already know it inside out and for those who have never been. . . . Illuminating\, thought-provoking\, surprising\, amusing. A marvel of observation and insight.” —Xavier Salomon\, chief curator of the Frick Collection \n“Sciolino is the Louvre whisperer. With wit\, charm and a scholar’s bent\, she walks us through the galleries\, shining her light on beloved masterpieces as well as on treasures tucked deep into gallery corners\, the ones that are easy to miss but that can be revelations even to those who know the museum well.” ― Dorie Greenspan\, New York Times bestselling author \n“A rich\, rewarding introduction to the greatest collection of art in the world. . . . A spirited\, sumptuous book that makes the Louvre feel welcoming — even if you arrive on a Tuesday\, when it’s closed.”  — Stacy Schiff\, author of A Great Improvisation: Franklin\, France\, and the Birth of America \nAbout the Author \nElaine Sciolino\, author of the New York Times bestseller The Only Street in Paris\, as well as The Seine\, La Seduction\, and Adventures in the Louvre (on sale April 1\, 2025)\, is a contributing writer and former Paris bureau chief for The New York Times\, based in Paris.  In 2010 she was decorated chevalier of the Legion of Honor\, the highest honor of the French state\, for her “special contribution” to the friendship between France and the United States. \n\n  \nRSVP by Apr 2 2025 4:15pm

SUMMARY:Specialty Burgundy Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Join Allye Spencer for a special wine tasting from the Chateau de Pommard. Founded in 1726 by Vivant Micault\, secretary to King Louis XV\, Château de Pommard remains one of the most iconic and visited wine estates in Burgundy. Clos Marey-Monge\, at the heart of the domain\, has been producing one of the greatest expressions of Pinot Noir for more than two millennia. The 20-hectare clay and limestone rich terroir make it the largest and most interesting monopole vineyards in the Côte d’Or. In July 2015\, UNESCO declared the Clos a world heritage protected climat of Burgundy. The Carabello-Baum family of San Francisco purchased the domain in 2014 and became just the fifth family to guide the estate in almost 300 years. The family has transformed the estate into the ultimate wine education destination where anyone can experience the phenomenon that is Burgundy. \nAF Members $45.00 \nNon Members $60.00 \nFor more information\, please contact admin@afdela.org

SUMMARY:D-Day and the Soul of France | French-American Histories
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nWednesday\, June 5\, 2024\n3pm PT / 4pm MT / 5pm CT / 6pm ET\nFederation of Alliances Françaises USA in collaboration with Villa Albertine\nIn English \n“French-American Histories\, One Story\, Two Narratives” is a program of virtual talks launched by the Villa Albertine in collaboration with the Federation of Alliances Françaises USA. Each episode reveals a different facet of the vibrant French-American tapestry\, through interviews with leading scholars\, experts\, and practitioners conducted by Dr. Iris de Rode\, an expert in the history of French-American relations. The interviews are broadcast live and recorded at the French Embassy or other locations in the United States. For this edition\, we are thrilled to host Roger Mummert\, for an episode focusing on French-American narratives around D-Day. \n“D-Day and the Soul of France – Exploring the Narratives of an Epic World Event”\nA conversation with Roger Mummert\nwith Iris de Rode\, Ph.D.\nRoger Mummert will revisit D-Day and the Battle of Normandy through an exploration of narratives\, both American and French. The GIs who fought and died in this epic invasion and liberation were called to duty in a “Great Crusade” that was fueled by a sense of “American exceptionalism.” Then\, in the horrors of battle\, they were driven by basic instincts to survive and get home. The people of Normandy faced a more complex set of narratives. After four years of bitter occupation\, liberation would come via a hellfire that claimed the lives of loved ones and reduced farms and towns to smoldering ruins. Some followed the narrative of restoring an “eternal France.” They fanned the “flame of resistance” with acts of sabotage against their occupiers. Others chose collaboration\, still others the middle ground of attentisme. \nThe narratives they followed and the choices they made were starkly illuminated in the national reckoning that followed the war. Historical interpretations of the narratives of these events have changed greatly over time. Now\, at the 80th anniversary of D-Day\, we examine them anew. \nRoger Mummert is founder of The Paris Project (theparisproject.net) and editor of its newsletter\, “Paris: A City of Ideas.” He is a writer and photographer whose work on cultural topics has been published in the New York Times and elsewhere. He also has written on travel and culinary topics for print\, radio and television. Mummert has created a series of presentations for the Alliance Française that include “Paris: A City of Ideas” and “Myths and Mysteries of the Bastille.” Other series accessible on www.theparisproject.net include “Quelle Bourgeois: Biography of a Social Class”; “Walking a Lobster: The Birth of la Bohème”; “The Greening of Paris”; and “Laïcité: It’s a French Thing.” Mummert recently toured battle sites and towns in Normandy in preparation for this presentation on D-Day. \nABOUT THE PROGRAM\n“FRENCH-AMERICAN HISTORIES\, ONE STORY\, TWO NARRATIVES”\n240 years ago\, fighting side by side for American independence\, France was the first ally of the newly formed United States of America. Since then\, the two countries have stood firm as “Sister Republics”\, championing shared principles of democracy\, freedom\, and equality. The durable partnership has been characterized by a shared ambition and a common necessity for cooperation in a wide variety of fields in an increasingly globalized world. These encounters\, spanning more than two centuries and ranging from the military to economic policy\, agriculture\, trade\, philosophy\, art\, science and technology\, have resulted in dynamic\, fruitful and inspirational cross-exchanges that have shaped the destiny of both countries. The two countries have numerous similarities but also separate histories\, cultures\, and institutions\, making the relation dynamic and creative\, but also at times contentious. Over the years\, comparable concepts that have been implemented in the distinct French and American cultures have flourished\, but also encountered alteration\, adaptation or even opposition\, requiring hurdles to be overcome and compromises to be found. France and the United States have frequently expressed their conviction in a single\, unifying story\, yet they needed two narratives to tell their peoples: One Story\, Two Narratives.
