DESCRIPTION:Notre-Dame – After the Fire: The Redesign of the Surroundings of Notre-Dame de Paris with Bas Smets\, Landscape Architect and Founder of Bureau Bas Smets (In English)\nIn partnership with the Alliance Française Miami Metro\, the Alliance Française de Chicago\, and the Friends of Notre-Dame de Paris\nThis event begins at 10am PT / 11am MT / 12pm CT / 1pm ET and will be IN ENGLISH. \nIn 2022\, the City of Paris announced that the team led by Belgian landscape designer Bas Smets won the competition to reimagine the area surrounding Notre-Dame Cathedral. Bas Smets will describe how the team plans to redesign the square in front of Notre-Dame Cathedral and the underground parking spaces beneath it\, the Jean XXIII square located behind the cathedral\, the Seine riverbanks\, and the adjacent streets\, in order to create a microclimate to mitigate the effects of climate change. This extensive project is scheduled to begin in 2025 and end in 2030. \nThis event will be IN ENGLISH. \n\n\n\n \n\n\nSpeaker: Bas Smets received master’s degrees in Architecture and Civil Engineering from the University of Leuven and in Landscape from the University of Geneva. In 2007\, he founded Bureau Bas Smets in Brussels\, whose designs explore new ways to transform the city into an urban ecology\, capable of producing cooling microclimates to counter climate change. In addition to his design work\, Bas Smets has taught at various schools of architecture in Europe. DESCRIPTION:NOTRE-DAME DE PARIS – Before the Fire: The Construction and History of Notre-Dame de Paris with Russell Kelley\, author of The Making of Paris\n(in English) \nIn partnership with the Alliance Française Miami Metro\, the Alliance Française de Chicago\, and the Friends of Notre-Dame de Paris\nThis event begins at 10am PT / 11am MT / 12pm CT / 1pm ET and will be IN ENGLISH \nThis illustrated lecture will explore the long and eventful history of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris\, from its foundation in 1163 to the devastating fire on April 15\, 2019\, which destroyed its attic\, roof\, and iconic spire. \nThe story of Notre-Dame de Paris begins in 1163\, when Bishop Sully laid the first stone on the Île de la Cité\, at the heart of medieval Paris. One of the earliest Gothic cathedrals\, it took 182 years to complete. Over the centuries\, this architectural marvel hosted defining moments in French history\, including the coronation of a young King Henry VI of England\, the marriage of the future Henri IV and Marguerite de Valois\, and the crowning of Napoléon I as Emperor. \nAfter falling into neglect during the Revolution\, Notre-Dame was restored by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc\, who added the iconic spire that tragically burned in 2019. \n\n\n\nRussell Kelley is Vice President of the Alliance Française Miami Metro and the author of The Making of Paris: The Story of How Paris Evolved from a Fishing Village into the World’s Most Beautiful City (Lyons Press\, 2021) and Walking Through the Ages of Paris – Ten Historical Walking Tours Through the City of Light (Lyons Press\, to be published in 2026). Outre ses résultats assez médiocres\, elle doit prochainement exprimer son choix d’orientation professionnelle : un vrai casse-tête.Elle en vient alors à se demander quelle incidence sa double culture a pu avoir sur la construction de son identité. Dans un dialogue plein d’humour avec son père\, elle part à la rencontre de ses racines turques et de ses souvenirs d’enfance. Entremêlant la danse et les mots\, le spectacle raconte avec la liberté d’un corps joyeux le long chemin vers l’affirmation de sa propre parole de femme. \n**En français avec surtitres en anglais.**

Carter\, Professor Emeritus of French at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Proust biographer. \nWilliam C. Carter is a distinguished Professor Emeritus of French at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His biography Marcel Proust: A Life was selected as a “Notable Book of 2000” by The New York Times. Harold Bloom has written that Carter is “Proust’s definitive biographer” and that his more recent book\, Proust in Love\, is “a marvelous study of the comic splendor of the great novelist’s vision of human Eros and its discontents.” He co-produced the award-winning documentary film Marcel Proust: A Writer’s Life. \nIn 2013\, Yale University Press published a new edition of the biography and began publishing a revised\, annotated edition of Scott Moncrieff’s distinguished translation of In Search of Lost Time. Swann’s Wayappeared in 2013 and In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower was published in October 2015. The Gale Group published in 2013 his edition of The Dictionary of Literary Biography volume (371) on Proust. That same year Carter received the Médaille d’Or du Mérite Francophone from the American Delegation of La Renaissance Française. \nFereshteh Priou is the founder of the Proust Society of Greenwich and leading a monthly gathering of Proust enthusiasts since 2007. The group members engage in close reading of Marcel Proust’s book\, À la recherche du temps perdu. Fereshteh started the fourth round of reading the book in January 2023.
